NEWS RELEASE – For Immediate Release May 10, 2012

Sport Policy Consultations to start on Friday

Minister with responsibility for Sport, Natalie Neita-Headley will start broad-based consultations towards a national Sport policy tomorrow, Friday May 11. Minister Neita-Headley said that the approach will include regional meetings so that the views from sports administrators and stakeholders in rural areas is included.Speaking at the 17th Carl March awards of Excellence at the Old Harbour Lions Civic centre on May 9, the Sport minister said, “It is important to go to the regional and community levels where much of our talent emerges, most of the sports development takes place and many sporting events are held. I will be inviting representatives from parish committees to four regional meetings, as part of the policy development process. The people have indicated that they need to tell the administration how they want the government to relate to them, and that this should be built into the framework from the policy level.”Noting that the first round of consultations is scheduled to end in May, the minister said that the first meetings will be with the sporting agencies of government including the Institute of Sports, Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission, the Sports Development Foundation, and Independence Park Limited.Minister Neita-Headley said that the strategy will have revenue earning as one of its guiding points.“It is up to us to develop the strategy with a keen eye on the potential financial benefits to the nation as we capitalize on the investments in sport infrastructure we have made and in talent of our athletes. In much the same way we have successfully marketed Jamaica through agencies of the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment, like the Jamaica Tourist Board, I believe that a competent and effective body dedicated to marketing our awesome sport potential as a uniquely Jamaican product can bring enormous benefits and similarly impressive opportunities,” Minister Neita Headley said. The ceremony honoured top boy and top girl of the 2012 ISSA GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Championships; Principal of the Old Harbour High School, Lynton Weir; and Executive Director, National Council for Senior Citizens, Mrs Beverley Hall Taylor.
